Objectives: To investigate the variability of serum estradiol concentration and to find out factors affecting on serum estradiol concentrations in Korean menopausal women during taking different kinds of hormone therapy (HT) regimen.
Methods: Medical records of 339 postmenopausal women who received oral HT between 1997 and 2006 in our hospital were reviewed retrospectively. We investigated the age, height, weight, body mass index (BMI), age at menarche, age at menopause, time since menopause, and causes of menopause (natural or surgical menopause) to investigate the effect of these factors to the variability of serum estradiol level during postmenopausal HT. We also analyzed the mean serum estradiol level according to the types of HT regimen.
Results: The highest mean serum estradiol level was 324.5¡¾170.5 pg/ml and the lowest mean serum estradiol level was 44.2¡¾20.2 pg/ml among the 11 HT regimen groups. We could not find any factors affecting the serum estradiol level except type of HT regimen. The type and dose of estrogen did affect serum estradiol level, however neither the addition of progesterone nor the type of progesterone contained in HT regimen affect serum estradiol.
Conclusion: Serum estradiol concentration during postmenopausal HT was much higher than our expectations. This study results could help a doctor to choose the most effective and safe hormone regimen for individual postmenopausal women.
